The Mackay Base Hospital provides a wide range of services to the diverse and rapidly developing communities of the Mackay region. The Redevelopment Project will, enhance and expand these services, improving access, sustainability, efficiency and effectiveness across the health continuum.
Queensland Health is committed to integrating public art into the public areas of the Mackay Base Hospital to achieve quality place-making and an embedded sense of community ownership. Recognising that art in public places can make a significant cultural contribution to the public realm, Queensland Health also understands the specific benefits that public art can bring to health environments and to the promotion of well being.
Brecknock Consulting, engaged through the Ranbury Management Group, provided public art advice to Queensland Health and implemented the public art component of the Mackay Base Hospital Redevelopment.
The artwork program for the hospital included a number of artwork opportunities; a suspended sculptural work by artist Tracey Johnson for the main entrance and waiting area, a bronze sculpture by artist Wanda Bennett within the central courtyard and integrated photographic works by Jill Chism on the walkway soffits. Other internal works include graphic works onto glazing, Ashley Holmes, and acoustic walls by Donna Robinson .
