MARKET DISTRICT PLAN
Client: Adelaide City Council
In 2015 Richard Brecknock was engaged by Adelaide City Council as a Cultural Planning advisor to the planning team developing the Market District Plan that includes Adelaide’s iconic central produce markets, China Town, multicultural Gouger Street and Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga. The project involved extensive community consultation, team planning sessions and the preparation of Directions Papers as supporting documents to the overall Market District Plan.
The Cultural Directions Paper addressed issues and opportunities associated with: cultural diversity, such as addressing the district’s Aboriginal heritage and intercultural potential; cultural activity, such as supporting an increased range of cultural/arts events and festivals; cultural economy, such as attracting an increase in creative/cultural industry workers; the cultural environment, such as developing adaptable public spaces for outdoor events and increased public art and activation; and especially strategies for celebrating and maximising the potential offered through the district’s strong food culture.
