Client: Queensland Health

Architect: Cox Rayner

Landscape Architect: RPS

Artists: Judy Watson, Shane Fitzgerald & Holly Grech, Arone Meeks, Andrew Rankin and Umbrella Studios

Brecknock Consulting was engaged by Queensland Health to manage the public art program for the Townsville Hospital Stage 1 redevelopment. The Townsville Health Service District (THSD) is undergoing considerable redevelopment to increase health services for the people of North Queensland.

The redeveloped Townsville Hospital will offer the local and regional community a wider range of health services. The hospital expansion project was fortunate to receive State Government art+place funding for the public art program. An overall curatorial rationale ‘Living Well’ was developed and artwork opportunities for both external and internal spaces were identified.

The artwork program included a number of artwork opprtunties including; a suite of sculptural elements distributed throughout the hospital grounds by artist Judy Watson and a photographic work by artists Shane Fitzgerald and Holly Grech for the Emergency Department entrance and waiting area. Other commissions installed included works for the ICU, NICU and corridors and lift lobbies throughout the hospital, by artists Arone Meeks, Andrew Rankin and Umbrella Studio.
